一、译文比较

1. Smith also dropped a bombshell: Nachlis had a criminal record.

译文一:史密斯还透露了一则爆炸性消息:纳克利斯曾经有过犯罪的记录。

译文二:史密斯还扔下了一颗炸弹:纳克利斯犯有前科。

2. The author’s fingerprint is quite obvious in all of his works.

译文一:作者的特色在他所有的作品中体现得十分明显。

译文二:作者在他的所有著作里留下的指纹都相当清晰。

Step 2 Explanation

二、引申的方法

1.词义从具体引向抽象,从特殊引向一般,从局部引向概括,从“实”引向“虚”等等。

There were times when emigration bottleneck was extremely rigid and nobody was allowed to leave the country out of his personal preference.

过去有过这种情况:移民限制极为严格,不许任何人出于个人考虑而迁居他国。

Kissinger felt that Rogers was quibbling, but the lawyer in Nixon supported the quibble of a fellow lawyer.

基辛格感到罗杰斯是在挑刺儿。但是,律师出身的尼克松支持了他的同行的挑刺儿。

Every family is said to have at least one skeleton in the cupboard.

俗话说,衣柜里面藏有骷髅,见不得人的事家家有。

2.词义从抽象引向具体,从一般引向特殊,从概括引向局部,从“虚”引向“实”等等

There is more to their life than political and social and economic problems; more than transient everydayness.

译文:他们的生活远不止那些政治的、社会的和经济的问题,远不止一时的柴米油盐问题

他不管人家喜欢不喜欢,紧跟着他们走了进去,决心不错过这个机会,把心里的问题弄个明白。

What is leadership?

Its qualities are difficult to define. But they are not so difficult to identify.

Leaders don’t force other people to go along with them. They bring them along. Leaders get commitment from others by giving it themselves, by building an environment that encourages creativity, and by operating whit honesty and fairness.
